Opening Concert
Friday 30th May 2008
Young Dundee band The Floor opened the festival as a precursor to the main event after blowing our judges away with their strong performance at an earlier audition. All pupils at Dundee's Harris Academy, they took over the stage a Montrose Town Hall and set about the huge task of opening for the legendary Average White Band with a confident and energetic show.
Glasgow based funk rockers Brown Eye Superfly were next on stage as main support and, with a full 9 piece band, delivered a powerful performance that won them more than a few new fans. With two further packed out free gigs in two of the official venues throughout the weekend, they certainly left their mark on Montrose.
For the finale, the Average White Band raised the roof on Montrose Town Hall as they gave a top performance of some of their most famous hits, blowing the 650 strong crowd away with their music and presence as only seasoned professionals can. A truly blistering performance from these funk and soul legends was enhanced further when Perthshire born Alan Gorrie strayed from the regular programme to dedicate Atlantic Avenue to Montrose Music Festival Chairperson Lynda Paton, who was instrumental in securing them for our first ever headline act.

High Street Extravaganza
Saturday 31st May 2008
Montrose Town House piazza played host to a day of music and fun for all ages. From the performers on the main stage to the entertainers and buskers throughout the High Street, the quality and diversity of entertainment on offer was unparalleled.
The sun came out to greet the opening of the High Street Extravaganza and sparked a carnival atmosphere the likes of which Montrose has never seen. With stalls set up in the High Street offering everything from arts and crafts to face painting to food and refreshments, Copie The Clown and Denis The Menace keeping everyone entertained with their antics, and the full programme of main stage entertainment running throughout the morning and afternoon, there really was something for everyone to enjoy.
Some of the many performers that took part in the extravaganza include Lathallan Pipe Band, The Usuals, Bugsy Malone, Tayside Young Fiddlers, David Ward Maclean, Tomlinsons, Gordon School of Dancing, Montrose Town Band, Lord Luken, Song Shop and The Reel McKay. Last on the main stage were eight piece celtic rockers Sons O’ The Soil, bringing what was a fantastic day to a close with top performance of some of their own songs, played in their own unique style.

Free Gigs
Saturday 31st May & Sunday 1st June 2008
The quantity, quality and diversity of the live music throughout the Saturday and Sunday has put Montrose firmly on the festival map. With 62 gigs, 2 hosted sessions and numerous open sessions being played in the 15 official venues, all free entry, there was something for every taste.
Montrose Music Festival 2008 was a truly eclectic weekend of music, from the acoustic strains of Alastair Hugh Artingstall, The Doghouse Roses, Hercules Mandarin and Bratach Bana in some of the outlying venues such as The Anchor Bar, The Black Abbot and The Neptune Bar, where you could have heard a pin drop during some of the performances, to the maxed out amps of F’n’3G’s, Kinch, Bacchanal and Kashmir Red as they rocked some of the packed out town centre venues such as The Star Hotel, Ash Bar, The Market Arms and Sharky’s.
Some of the most talked about performances of the weekend include:
The two packed out gigs by the one man rock sensation Gerry Jablonski who, armed only with an acoustic guitar, a microphone and various pedals, brought the house down with his showmanship and unique style.
A truly outstanding performance from multi talented 16 year old singer, song-writer & musician Joni Fuller brought the audience to their feet for a well deserved standing ovation. Playing violin, guitar and piano, and singing a collection of some of her own songs, Joni won many new fans and showed a star quality that sets her amongst the best young musicians in the UK today.
Young up and coming Leeds band Kinch also pulled out all the stops for their two packed out gigs on the Saturday. With a set of covers, followed by an outstanding set of their own material, they proved why they’re being tipped to be the next big thing to come out of the rejuvenated Yorkshire music scene.

Headlining the concert was young Dundee rockers The Floor, who won the auditions to play the opening support spot at out Headline Concert on Fri 30th May.

Survivors Night
Sunday 1st June 2008
Survivors night at The Black Abbot was intended to be a nice chilled out evening of music and fun to finish what was a fantastic weekend, and people turned out in huge numbers to take part in the closing event.
The main raffle was drawn by Montrose FC players Hugh Davidson & Chris Hegarty at around 8:30pm, with the top prize of a 40” LCD TV going to Paul Robertson of Carnoustie. Then the music began.
The open mic session was kicked off by local celtic/folk/roots band Heidrum, helped out on a couple of numbers by local drum maestro Mikey Knowles.
Next up was Gerry Jablonski, who along with Heidrum’s bass player Jim Reid, and again, Mikey Knowles on drums, started his set by raising the roof with a rockin’ rendition of Maggie May.
More great tunes followed from singers and musicians such as Sandy Tweeddale, David Ward Maclean, Jamie Flanagan, Ewan “The Messiah” Wilson, Joe, Jim Emerson, Bart Simpson, The Usuals, Jenna Morrow and of course Jim Reid and Mikey Knowles to name but a few. Many different combinations from various different bands, solo performers and singers made for some cracking off the cuff numbers which helped to make it an unforgettable night for everyone there.
For those that preferred a slightly more peaceful evening after their hectic weekend, the lounge bar played host to an open acoustic session, thoroughly enjoyed by the players and listeners alike.

What was said
Here are some of the many comments made about the 1st Montrose Music Festival of 2008 ...
"Wonderful festival. We came over from Holland and were there from Friday till Monday and had a grrreat time. You may not have noticed us but we played (guitar, cello and vocals) on the sunny side of the church on Saturday. We had the last two tickets for the Average White Band and spent Saturday and Sunday night at the Market Arms. We would like to thank the people of Montrose for their hospitality. Their reception of the two Dutch lads was heart-warming, we felt very much at home. Gerrit and Lucien, The LOEM duo"
"Watched Gerry Jablonski rip the roof off the Black Abbot on Saturday, then i had the pleasure of drumming with him at the Survivors night 24hrs later. It doesnt get any better than that!"
